About Us
This website is run by Jennifer Ramsay who experienced the loss of pregnancy through miscarriage. Then a Mother of one, Jennifer was surprised by the level of loss and grief she experienced from a seemingly normal medical issue that was ‘to be expected’.
A comment from a friend,
“Other cultures acknowledge these experiences differently”,
prompted her to discover the Japanese Buddhist ritual of Mizuko Kuyo - a ceremony to acknowledge and mourn the loss of a child before birth.
Although not Buddhist herself, Jennifer found healing through acknowledging her loss through ceremony. She found comfort from having a word with which she could refer to the lost baby ‘Mizuko’, which literally translates to ‘water baby’ (there being no equivalent English word). Locating a beautiful and meaningful item in a Mizuko Jizo figure provided something tangible for a loss that there was nothing to show for.
Speaking with many women and families after this Jennifer discovered for herself how common the experience of miscarriage is. The feelings of loss and devastation were also common and yet not shared widely. Women were very interested in learning more about Mizuko Kuyo and how to acknowledge the loss respectfully through ceremony. Through communication our world has become smaller and we can learn and borrow from other cultures.
Now a Mother of three Jennifer wants to share this knowledge with other women and families who have experienced the grief and loss of miscarriage or abortion.
